Genda
A commonly used motif in Indian textiles in the form of marigold flower, genda denotes the marigold flower which is considered auspicious in Hindu tradition. Genda is one among many floral motifs that have been incorporated as design elements in textiles.
From the Mughal period onwards a number of flower motifs, many of them Persian in origin, began to be included in textiles in the from of boteh. The marigold is one of the relatively newer motifs to have emerged, is popular across a wide range of textile traditions such as jamdani, banarasi and paithani, and has also acquired a more geometrical shape in its rendering over textiles such as phulkari.
