Meaning “door-keeper” in Sanskrit, it is the figure of a sentinel found at doorways and entranceways leading to the sanctum sanctorum (the central shrine) in Hindu, Buddhist and Jaina temples. The depictions and forms of these figures may vary across iconographic traditions.
