Saptamatrika

Saptamatrika

A group of seven female deities — Brahmani, Vaishnavi, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Varahi, Chamunda and Indrani — worshipped in Hindu Shakti traditions. They are the consorts of gods from the Hindu pantheon, and each matrika personifies the energy of her counterpart. Some representations have an eighth deity, Yogeshvari, who is believed to have been created out of Shiva’s mouth. From the Sanskrit words sapta, meaning “seven,” and matrika, meaning “divine mothers.”
