Sarnath Style

Sarnath Style

A style of sculpture that developed at Sarnath — an important Buddhist pilgrimage center during the late fifth and early sixth century — that laid the foundations for Buddhist art in the Indian subcontinent. Characteristics of sculptures made in the Sarnath style include smooth limbs, ornate but regularised headdresses, thin and draped clothing, closed eyes and an expression of benevolence. It also influenced the representation of the Buddha.
