From the Sanskrit for “sun,” he is the Sun God in Vedic and Hindu mythology. Typically depicted holding a chakra and riding a chariot drawn by seven horses, he has also been represented in non-Hindu art, including in carvings at the ancient Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya, Bihar.
