Contemporary artist, editor and educator, Sreshta Rit Premnath is known for his multidisciplinary art practice that derives from conceptual art and minimalism.

Born in Bengaluru, Premnath studied art at the Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland (2002), and received a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art (2003) and an MFA from Milton Avery Graduate School of Fine Arts, Bard College, New York (2006). In 2008, he enrolled for an independent study program at the Whitney Museum of Art, New York. In 2004, Premnath founded Shifter, a contemporary journal that situates itself at the intersections of art, politics and philosophy to prompt cross-cultural dialogue. He also established the Archive of the Future Anterior in 2010 — a project aimed at building a resource of unrealised projects by artists, writers and scientists. He has taught at Moore College, Philadelphia, and is the current director of BFA Fine Arts at Parsons School of Design, New York.

Premnath employs a range of materials, including metal sheets, corrugated paper, photographs, lenticular prints, cardboards, sculptures and videos. His work focuses on the relational dynamic between the artworks in addition to their individual display, with the meaning changing according to the space and their context of placement. The central themes in his works include identity, absence and erasure, as well as power and protest. He also examines the invisibility and misrecognition of marginalised communities, as well as the role of language in constructing meaning and histories. He also examines environmental concerns in his work.

Notable works include Zero Knot (2010), Leo: Procedures in search of an original index (2010), Storeys End (2011) and The Last Image (2012). He has exhibited at Bose Pacia Gallery, New York (2006); GALLERYSKE, Bengaluru (2008); Queens Museum, New York (2015); The Guild, Mumbai (2016); Raza Foundation, New Delhi (2017); and Columbia University, New York (2020).

At the time of writing, Premnath lives in New York.
