Dastkari Haat Samiti
A not-for-profit organisation that supports Indian handicrafts, Dastkari Haat Samiti was established by Jaya Jaitly in 1986. The association brings together individual craftspeople and families, co-operations and associations working with handicrafts and textiles to foster sustainable artistic practices of India.
The organisation president and executive committee work pro bono and are assisted by a limited administrative staff. The Samiti organises an annual crafts bazaar, held at Dilli Haat, New Delhi, where artisans and craftspeople who work with the association display and market their work. The organisation also helps artisans developing new and marketable products while providing a platform for direct access to customers. The first bazaar was held in 1986 and has since featured a diverse spectrum of crafts as well as cultural performances, such as weaving and bandhani work from Gujarat, block prints and embroidery from Hardoi, kotpad weaving from Odisha, beadwork and gudia shilp from Jhabua, Madhya Pradesh and silver jewellery from Rajasthan. In recent years, it has also organised bazaars outside of Dilli Haat, most recently at Dutch Palace, Pune.
The Samiti also documents artistic, architectural and textile traditions and processes across India, and curates these as online exhibits on Google Arts and Culture. As of 2012, the organisation consisted of 148 members of individuals and societies, with over thirty thousand artisans and their family members benefiting from their support. The organisation also worked with artisans during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide support systems, ration and financial aid.
