Translating to ‘womb chamber’ from Sanskrit, it is the innermost sanctuary in Jain, Buddhist and Hindu temples, within which the idol or image of the temple deity is located and worshipped. It is usually designed with only one entrance, which faces east towards the rising sun, and may include an ambulatory path around the deity.
