Glossary

A term coined by the Mahayana Buddhist tradition to denote followers of the contrasting, more orthodox school of Buddhism. Literally meaning “small vehicle,” the term first appeared around the first and second centuries CE in Mahayana texts. It is often used synonymously with the Theravada school of Buddhism.
