Lamprey’s Grid

Lamprey’s Grid

A grid system developed in 1869 by John H Lamprey that was used to photograph subjects for anthropological studies. It consisted of a black background with white strings arranged in a grid of two-inch squares. The grid was used to make images of colonial subjects, who were often photographed in the nude and at times posed with measuring sticks against the grid for anthropometric study.
