Victorian Salon Painting

Victorian Salon Painting

A number of painting styles that gained popularity in English salons during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901), such as the naturalism of the Pre-Raphaelites, social realism and a form of neo-classicism inspired by the nineteenth-century Aesthetic Movement. The development and popularisation of these styles of painting coincided roughly with imperial prosperity and post-industrial decline in Britain.
