Satavahana Dynasty

Satavahana Dynasty

An ancient Indian dynasty also referred to as the Andhras in the Puranas, they are among the first major polities known to have emerged in the Deccan. Originally based in present-day Maharashtra in the first and second centuries CE, their conflicts with the Western Satraps led to the dynasty’s base of power shifting to present-day Telangana and Andhra Pradesh during the late second and early third centuries CE. Their patronage led to the excavation of the earliest known Buddhist cave temples in southern and western India, examples of which can be seen in Nashik.
