Shala

Shala

Derived from the Sanskrit word broadly meaning “house” or “shelter”, shala may refer to a covered pavilion, often oblong; a feeding house; or a centre of higher education associated with a Hindu or Jain temple and supported by the local community and patrons. In Dravida temple architecture, it is the name for a barrel-shaped roof, or specific decorative motifs on the roof or the gopuram of the temple.
