Glossary

A broad term used for fine glazed pottery made after the nineteenth century, comprising mineral grains such as quartz or sand bound together by varying amounts of glass. The addition of oxide of tin to the slip of a lead glaze lends an opaque quality to the glaze, providing a background for painted decoration.
