A celestial dancer or apsara known for her beauty, Urvashi was part of Indra’s court. She is believed to have been born when the divine sage Narayana slapped his thigh after Indra sent the apsaras to distract Nara-Narayana from their penance. She appears in a number of myths and tales, including the Mahabharata and the Vikramorvashiyam of Kalidasa.
