Minor female semi-divine, half-human half-serpent creatures in Buddhist, Jain and Hindu mythology, and the female counterpart to nagas. They are considered consorts of Nagaraja (the serpent king). Prominent depictions of naginis include a fifth-century CE stone statue from Madhya Pradesh standing underneath a canopy of open cobra hoods.
