Alexander Cunningham

Alexander Cunningham

Alexander Cunningham (b. 1814; d. 1893) was a British army engineer and archaeologist who served as the first Archaeological Surveyor of the Government of India. He helped establish the Archaeological Survey of India in 1861 and became its first Director-General in 1871. He led ASI’s discovery and protection of Buddhist sites, including Sarnath in 1837, Sankassa in 1842 and Sanchi in 1851.
