Waxed Paper Negative

Glossary

A photographic negative using a base of paper coated with oil or beeswax before the application of dry and stable light-sensitive compounds on it. Emerging as a variation of the calotype in which untreated paper is sensitised and later waxed, this technique was promoted by French artist Gustave Le Gray in the 1850s. As the base could be prepared well in advance of and developed much after exposure, this medium lent itself to travel photography and artistic experimentation owing to the aesthetic qualities of the paper negative.
