Glossary

A literary and artistic movement that originated in the works of late-nineteenth-century French poets who rejected the conventional emphasis on the accurate representation of reality associated with naturalism and realism in favour of more metaphorical depictions. It rapidly spread to other parts of Europe and America and influenced the art, literature and theatre of the twentieth century.
