Glossary

A female Hindu deity originally worshipped as a local river goddess in the region of Hampi in present-day Karnataka and later as a consort of the Virupaksha form of the deity Shiva. Worship of the goddess likely dates to the seventh century, corresponding to a site historically known as Pampa-tirtha. By the twelfth century, Virupaksha had emerged as a dominant deity in the region and a shrine to the goddess can be found within the Virupaksha Temple in present-day Hampi.
