The horse-headed avatar of Vishnu, he is the deity of knowledge and wisdom within the Hindu pantheon. He is usually depicted in white, with the body of a man and the head of a horse. Within Buddhism, the term refers to a yaksha attendant of the Avalokiteshvara Buddha, who is also worshipped as a teacher and healer in some Buddhist traditions.
