Palden Lhamo

Glossary

A wrathful female deity in Tantric Buddhism who is considered to be a dharmapala (protector of dharma) and the protector of wisdom, and one of the three primary dharmapalas in the Gelugpa order of Tibetan Buddhism. She is also considered the principal protector of Bhutan, Lhasa and the Dalai and Panchen Lamas. The deity is typically depicted with blue skin and red hair, and is shown seated on a white mule. From the Tibetan dpal ldan lha mo, meaning “glorious goddess.”
