Frieze

Glossary

The central section of the entablature (a capital on the top of a pillar), situated below the cornice and above the architrave. Friezes may be present inside or outside the building and may be decorated with low-relief sculptures. The term also refers to a similarly depicted band or line in a non-architectural setting.
