Kalachuri Dynasty

Kalachuri Dynasty

A name adopted by three major Indian dynasties. The earliest known Kalachuri Dynasty reigned over parts of west and central India between the sixth and seventh centuries and are believed to have commissioned some of the earliest excavations at the Ellora and Elephanta caves. The Kalachuris of Tripuri (present-day Tewar in Madhya Pradesh) dominated much of central and eastern India between the seventh and thirteenth centuries CE, while another Kalachuri Dynasty briefly reigned from Kalyana (present-day Basavakalyan in Karnataka) in the twelfth century after overthrowing the Later Western Chalukyas.
