A principal figure in Pure Land Buddhism, he is one of the five Dhyani Buddhas. According to Mahayana texts, the monk Dharmakara became Amitabha upon attaining enlightenment. Amitabha is usually accompanied by his peacock mount, an alms bowl and his consort, Pandara. He is also known as Amitayus or the Buddha of Infinite Light.
