A genre of painting that focused predominantly on buildings and their interiors rather than treating them as background. Architectural painting developed as an independent genre during the sixteenth century in Flanders and the Netherlands, reaching its height with Dutch paintings in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Its notable proponents include Bartholomeus van Bassen, Paul Vredeman de Vries, Hendrik van Steenwijk I, Theo van Doesburg and Jan van der Heyden.
