The Hindu and Sikh solar new year and the spring harvest festival, it is usually celebrated in the month of April. Among the Sikhs, it is also the day that commemorates the tenth guru of Sikhism, Guru Gobind Singh, and his formation of the Khalsa Panth in 1699. Celebrations within the community include paying respects to the Khalsa as well as the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs.
