Charitable organisation dedicated to the conservation of European civilian cemeteries across former colonial territories of the British Empire in South and Southeast Asia. The British Association for Cemeteries in South Asia (BACSA) was founded in 1977 by Theon Wilkinson, a repatriated British national born in Cawnpore (now Kanpur, India), and is funded by donations from its members and others. The association provides funds and expertise to communities and conservation groups to restore their local cemeteries and monuments built between 1600, when the British East India Company was formed, and 1947, when India attained independence from colonial rule. BACSA additionally serves communities by locating the graves of persons of interest and maintaining large burial records. The association publishes a bi-annual journal, Chowkidar.
