Also known as Devi Bhagavatam, it is often categorised as a Mahapurana and revolves around the figure of the Devi (Mother Goddess). The text has been variously dated between c. ninth century and the sixteenth century CE. It is one of the foremost texts within the Shaktism tradition and highlights the worship of Stree Shakti or the female principle as the origin of all existence. From the Sanskrit words devi, meaning “heavenly” or “divine,” bhagavatam, meaning “devotee of the blessed devi” and purana, meaning “old.”
