An aquatic migratory bird associated with geese or swans in Sanskrit literature, and the mount of the Hindu goddess Saraswati. The bird also symbolises moksha (release from the cycle of birth and death) and is considered to be a link between heaven and earth. It is also a recurring feature in Gandharan art.
