Jatamukuta

Jatamukuta

A hairstyle or headdress in the Indian iconographic tradition in which long, matted hair is twisted and piled atop the head as a tall conical cap or crown, with some ornamentation. Sanskrit for ‘crown of matted hair’, it is associated with ascetics in the Hindu tradition. It is most commonly seen in depictions of the Hindu deities Shiva and Brahma, and also found in Jain and Buddhist art.
