An ancient Sanskrit text on sexuality and eroticism, dating to c. 400 BCE–300 CE and attributed to Vatsyayana. It is part of the larger genre of texts known as Kama Shastra, which focus on kama (desire). The text is said to have influenced a number of secondary literature and representations in Indian art, most notably in the temple sculptures at Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh. From the Sanskrit kamasutra, meaning “Principles of Love.”
