Clan that ruled the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal between 450 and 750 CE. The Licchavis originate in the ancient region of Greater Magadha (roughly modern-day Bihar) where they formed an independent oligarchic republic (ganasangha) from the seventh century BCE until the rise of the Gupta empire in the fifth century CE, when they lost political power and migrated to the Kathmandu Valley.
