A text of the Lokottaravada school of early Buddhism, it was written in Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit between the second century BCE and the fourth century CE. It mostly contains Jatakas (tales from the past lives of the Buddha) and Avadanas (tales narrated by the Buddha on the deeds of past lives affecting subsequent lives). From the Sanskrit, meaning “Great Event” or “Great Story.”
