The third-highest civilian award in India, awarded for distinguished service or achievement in the fields of art, social work, public affairs, science, trade, industry, medicine, literature, sports and civil service. Instituted in 1954, it is annually conferred by the Prime Minister of India to both citizens and non-citizens, during their lifetimes or posthumously, on Republic Day (January 26).
