The term is used across Theravada, Mahayana and Tibetan Buddhism and is found in texts from the Pali canon, Buddhist canonical texts including the Apadana, Buddhavamsa, Chariyapitaka and the Jataka Tales as well as in post-canonical commentaries. From the Sanskrit and Pali word parama, meaning “perfection.”
