The sixth avatar or incarnation of the Hindu deity Vishnu, he is known for his aggression, bravery, patience and serenity. His name literally translates from the Sanskrit to ‘Rama with an axe’ — a weapon he is typically depicted holding. Within the Mahabharata, he appears as the teacher of Bhishma, Dronacharya and Karna.
