The sixth avatar or incarnation of the deity Vishnu, he is known for his aggression, bravery, patience and serenity. His name literally translates to “Rama with an axe,” a weapon he is typically depicted holding. Within the Mahabharata, he appears as the teacher of Bhishma, Dronacharya and Karna.
