Instituted in 2009, it is an award given by the Government of India to textile craftspeople for their outstanding contributions towards the sustenance and revival of Indian handloom traditions. It is named after Kabir Das, the fifteenth-century mystic poet and weaver, who was born in Benaras (now Varanasi).
