A South Asian stringed instrument, it is a hollow trapezoid wooden box which generally has twenty-five bridges, with four steel strings stretched on each bridge. It is played while seated on the floor, with the help of light wooden mallets. It is an important instrument in the folk music of the Jammu and Kashmir region and was likely referred to as the Shatha Tantri Veena (the hundred-stringed veena) in ancient Sanskrit texts.
