A vocal style or genre within Hindustani classical music inspired by the romantic, devotional literature of the medieval-era Bhakti movement. The text is primarily in dialects of present-day Uttar Pradesh, such as Awadhi and Braj Bhasha. Derived from the Hindi thumakna, meaning “a graceful, dancing gait.”
