One of the ten avatars of the Hindu deity Vishnu, he is depicted as a short figure dressed in a loincloth and deerskin. Vamana is believed to have taken the kingdom of the asura king Bali by asking for three feet of land, after which he encompassed the three worlds by growing into the giant Trivikrama or “Thrice-Powerful”. Returning the heavens to the king of the gods, Indra, he then sent Bali to the underworld.
