A body of religious texts composed in Sanskrit and considered the oldest scriptures in Hinduism. There are four primary texts — Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharvaveda — which are divided on the basis of subject matter. The oldest of the four, the Rigveda, was composed c.1500–1200 BCE, while the other three were composed c. 1200–900 BCE. From the Sanskrit veda, meaning “knowledge” or “wisdom.”
