A heterodox religious tradition that emphasises the feminine principle through a repetition of mantras (sacred syllables), mandalas (symbolic drawings) and other practices. Its origins can be traced to pre-Vedic fertility cults, and it later developed into a complex metaphysical theology which influenced Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions.
